Christine Ankaoua
Artworks for sale
Christine Ankaoua is an abstract artist who favours large-format works. Operating outside the classical schools of painting, Ankaoua’s career has relied only upon her instinct and personal approach to painting. Nonetheless, her work has been exhibited extensively in France and around the world.
Art critic Yves Michaud said of her, ‘There is monochrome and monochrome. That of Christine Ankaoua is worked, researched, nuanced: the colour is deep and rich, the result of a sedimentation of moments. (...) Her red, ochre, orange, green, and blue backgrounds are never uniform, neutral, or homogeneous. They are enriched, weighted, laden with nuances. Christine Ankaoua thus manages to give the painting a particular vibration, a kind of visual pulsation.’
Disconnected from the rest of the world when she paints, Christine Ankaoua begins her process by working on the colour of her imaginary landscapes. She speaks to her canvas. She attacks it with a brush, a knife, or her bare hands. She accents her large monochrome surfaces with a few lines of bright hues. Among the deep warm colours, these lines and touches punctuate her work. Warm tones give way to cooler ones, which dance and intermingle like an ode to light, playing with textures and chromatic ranges. In a gestural ballet, Christine Ankaoua deploys all her physical energy in the composition of her works. Listening only to her painting, she gives free rein to a frenzy of colours that cut and contrast with the background of the canvas, breathing a fresh visual pulse into her work.
